Some members of the Straw Hat

Cheerful, optimistic and fearless, Luffy’s dream is to become “King of the Pirates” and find Gold Roger’s treasure, One Piece. Helping him on this quest is the lucky straw hat he got from his idol Red-Haired Shanks, and his fantastic power to stretch like rubber, which he gained as a boy after eating one of the Cursed Fruits called theGum-Gum Fruit. Unfortunately, this Cursed Fruit also took away his ability to swim. Not a good thing for a pirate! Still, Luffy has learned to use his rubber powers in battle, and is an almost unbeatable fighter. That, along with his happy-go-lucky ways, makes Luffy a pirate captain most any crew would follow.

Zolo is a bounty hunter, notorious throughout the world for chasing pirates until Luffy convinces him to join his crew and become a pirate himself. He is a master ofsantôryu, or “three-sword,” style, fighting with three swords at once: one in each hand and one in his mouth. His ambition is to become the greatest swordsman in the world. Cool, brooding and with a dry sense of humour, Zoro balances Luffy’s gleeful enthusiasm with a dose of straight ahead common sense. He is Luffy’s first mate and the ship’s master swordsman.

Before Luffy convinced him to join his crew, Sanji was the Assistant Chef at the Bistro on the Brine called Baratie. He prides himself at being a ladies’ man, but that he’s standoffish, sarcastic and often rude doesn’t help his cause. As a boy, Sanji nearly starved on a desert island but was saved by another castaway, Zeff, who is the owner and head chef at Baratie. Now he is absolutely devoted to Zeff. He fights using only his feet, following Zeff’s belief that hands should be used only for cooking. He hopes to find the part of the ocean called “The Great Blue” which, according to legend, contains all the fish in the world.

Usopp comes from a small seaside village where he’s known as the town liar, because he has a habit of giving false alarms about pirate invasions. Eventually, when pirates really do come to attack the village, the both fearful and brave Usopp teams up with Luffy and company to stop them. Afterwards, Luffy invites Usopp to join his crew as the ship’s Marksman, making his dream of becoming a pirate just like his father come true. Boyish, playful and fond of telling tall tales, Usopp’s an excellent shot, especially with his weapon of choice, the slingshot.

Tony Tony Chopper has had a rough time making friends in his life; he’s never really fit in anywhere since he became part-man part-reindeer, and starting out with a blue nose didn’t help things either! The only friend he ever had was a man named Dr. Hiriluk. Many years ago, the doctor took Tony Tony Chopper in after villages assaulted him for being a monster. The other reindeer wanted nothing to do with him either because they also viewed him as a freak. Dr. Hiriluk gave Tony Tony Chopper his name and vowed to teach him everything about being a doctor. He had a reputation around town as a quack, so Tony Tony Chopper didn’t learn much from him about medicine. However, he did pass on his passion for helping people and his sense of unrelenting hope. As tme went by, Dr. Hiriluk became terminally ill, and Tony Tony Chopper lost his best friend and mentor. Tony Tony Chopper went to live with Dr. Kureha so he could finish his medical training. He’s learned everything he can, and now he’s ready to start his adventures on the Grand Line as the Straw Hat Crew’s newest friend and doctor!

Luffy grew up admiring this red haired pirate, whose crew regularly visited Luffy’s village for supplies. When Luffy was a boy, Shanks saved him from a sea monster, losing his own arm in the process! It was also Red-Haired Shanks’ Gum Gum Fruit that Luffy mistakenly ate just a few days earlier. Shanks is Luffy’s hero and he always wears Shanks’ straw hat, which the Cockney pirate loaned to him, as a sign of encouragement and loyalty.

Mihawk is the world’s greatest swordsman. He is also a member of the Seven Armed Seas, a group of reformed pirates who help the Navy capture other pirates. He’s an intimidating figure famous for his piercing “hawk eyes,” and the two blades he carries: a tiny dagger worn around his neck, and an enormous sword, as tall as he is, that’s strapped to his back. Zolo’s dream is to defeat Mihawk some day and become the world’s greatest swordsman.

Some villains of anime

Alvida is the first pirate Luffy encounters in his voyages. She’s big and she’s bad. But her immense appetite actually causes her to lose weight at one point when she eats a Cursed Fruit that makes her body go through an amazing transition. But she’s still as ruthless a pirate as she ever was.

Like Luffy, Buggy has eaten one of the Cursed Fruits that bestow strange powers. It was called the “Chop-Chop” Fruit and it gave him the ability to split his body into pieces like a jigsaw puzzle. Buggy looks like a clown, and the pirates in his crew all resemble circus performers, but there’s nothing funny about these ruthless villains. Buggy is very sensitive about his red, oversized nose, and will attack anyone who makes fun of it. And one last thing to remember about Buggy. . . he always gets the last laugh.

Kuro was the Captain of the Black Cat Pirates but disguised himself as a mild-mannered butler called Klahadore, as part of a 3-year plot to steal a sickly girl’s fortune and retire from his career on the high seas in style. Kuro is supremely cool and well-spoken, and quite crafty; he’s known among pirates as “The Man with a Thousand Plans.” His two vicious attacks. . . the Stealth Walk and the Cat Out of the Bag make him virtually unbeatable in battle.

Krieg is the don of the Pirate Armada, the largest fleet of pirate ships in the East Blue sea. He wears heavy, ornate armour fitted with powerful weaponry. When Krieg’s armada is decimated during a voyage to the Grand Line, he tries to hijack Baratie, the restaurant on the sea, and convert it into his new flagship.

Arlong is the captain of the Fish-Man Pirates, a group of Merpeople who are part man, part fish. Eight years ago, the Fish-Man Pirates conquered Nami’s hometown, Coco Village. Nami escaped but never forgot about the raid. Arlong rules Coco Village from his headquarters, Arlong Park, and has ambitions to conquer the entire East Blue sea.
